Future marketing – why we need to be small and focused again

2013 predictions, marketing predictions, future mega trends 2013

future marketing 2013

I went to a marketing conference last week. The entrance, enrollment and aura were ‘uber’ chic. The miniature pastries were impressive and the panoramic views of rolling meadows injected mini-shots of euphoria.

Throughout the presentations something strange happened. Everyone seemed to recall the real role of marketing. Never mind future megatrends, it was all about lead generation. Gee whiz we forgot our roots… Amidst all these conversations, engagements and connectivity, we collectively got sidetracked, meandered aimlessly down pixelated paths – only to discover they were split ends or dead ends.

We think we have it figured out…

At last we can make sense of the waterfalls of social media streams, SEO metrics and the big fat data. 2012 is supposed to be the year we harness social media to get results – the year we build real online communities and translate it into revenue. No more spaghetti throwing on the wall to see what sticks.  Finally we can make smarter decisions.

Hang on… Can we be so sure we got it this time round? What if we have lost the ability to know how we know?

Digital philosopher David Weinberger, in his book “Too big to know” flips the concept of knowledge around its very axel. Until not that long ago, knowledge in the form of science, marketing, education… was sourced from books and experts. Today knowledge is in the networks. Myriads of streams of data coil their way through connections and communities.

Supposedly, our friends, family, even you and I are churning out valuable information nodes. Believe it or not someone is actually tracking some of this information some of the time and measuring it in real time.

But who is to say these digital dust storms generate value? Since when did everything become so manageable? And who is to say that what we consider facts really are the facts?

Somewhere along the way, the line between – writers, bloggers, post creators, spectators and spotters, got blurred. Suddenly everyone is an expert.

So… how do you weigh the expertise of this crowd?

As a marketing consultant, not that long ago, I spent a large amount of my time researching  material and presenting it in polished power point presentations. Today I am also sourcing some information from “network experts.” Like many of my colleagues, I am experimenting with meta data gleaned from social media monitoring tools.

The question is – does it provide enough insight? We are trying so hard to hear the voice of the customer, we are hoping to analyze it, but there is so much noise out there. No matter how well we try to capture and present engagement, can we really create marketing intelligence out of it?

Too often there is a disparity in the demographics between those who, let’s say, tweeted about a product, and those who bought the product, and the disparity is large enough to overturn any predicted result.

The US Republican race between Romney and Santorum is a great example of how often one candidate is overrated based on network noise that was analyzed with the coolest tools to date (and you can bet on it that millions will continue to be spent on extracting that information and presenting it in glossy reports).

Towards 2013, what can we do to avoid marketing traps, digital delusions and data debris?

Social media data mining is growing but it is firstly and fore mostly a guide rather than the ultimate answer. We can’t just neatly enter all the parameters into an app, click go and hope that it spits out the answer in real time.

Sure there is a place for big data and its new cousin – affinity data (valuable relationships between consumer behavior, products and content used to create more targeted marketing), but social network platforms are mercurial. Just look how sites like Digg, Foursquare and Gowalla are declining and Pinterest is rising.

Sure we need to take advantage of the expertise shared around the networks. After all, collaborative sharing is spreading valuable information and network knowledge. But there are also endless echo chambers spreading masses of unedited mush.

In the end we still need to combine tools with experience, instinct and an ability to think.

Perhaps our greatest task is balance – A balance between data mining –with more direct information eco-systems.

Perhaps towards 2013 we need to focus more on lead generation by talking, yes physically talking  more directly, and more often to the market. We need to build smaller, more focused network communities, and never lose sight of why the hell should they listen to us in the first place.

Millions gear up to take in Queen’s Diamond Jubilee

The tension is in the air (Credit:Red Diam)

The Queen’s diamond jubilee is just around the corner, and
the excitement and tension is in the air. It could be felt all the way from
England, where millions are getting ready for the annual ritual of observing
the crown jewels.

Crowds who attend the festivities will get a glimpse of the
jewels in improved lighting. The display, which attracts over 2.5 million
visitors each year, will feature an assortment of crowns, swords, rings, and
scepters – all the trappings of royalty glistening as brightly as ever.

One of the highlights of the exhibit is Queen Victoria’s
small diamond crown, which contains 1,187 precious gemstones. This mainstay of
the royal collection has been in the family for centuries. Indeed, many of the
jewels were lost after the Civil War and were remade for Charles II’s
coronation in 1661.

As if that weren’t enough, revelers can also take in a
collection with some of the largest diamonds in the world. Some of the pieces
even have over a thousand precious stones encrusted on them.

It seems London will be the center of the attention this
year, what with the Diamond Jubilee coming just months before the highly
anticipated Summer Olympics.

Why Newer Designer Drugs Are Hazardous

There are always new types of drugs coming onto the marketplace. This is a very dangerous trend as most of these new drugs are unregulated and have had little amounts of testing performed on them. One of the newest drug crazes to hit the streets is called Kratom. This is a leaf from the orient that users chew to get an effect similar to that of opiates. However, it is now being reported that the leaf can have very serious side effects. It is not known yet if this leaf can lead to an addiction. However, if a person does develop an addiction, it is important for them to get help at a drug detox rehab.

New Drugs

This drug was used in the Orient as a way to fight pain and fatigue. Also, proponents of this new drug claim that it gives users a sense of confidence when dealing with very stressful situations. These feelings are actually brought on, however, do not last for long. That is how people develop drug addiction.

Kratom Kraze

Now, within the United States the once innocent Kratom is of course, being combined with other chemical adulterants that make it far more dangerous than it was ever intended to be, especially if mixed with other sedatives such as alcohol. Essentially this peace inducing drug which was also used as an antidote for opiate addiction and heroin addiction has now become an addictive substance itself.

Addiction

Kratom can become very addictive and just has some ridiculous side effects. So, the drug that was supposed to boost confidence and make social situations super successful instead induces anxiety, insomnia, intestinal illnesses, depression, and the ever popular loss of libido. Look’s like that addiction backfired. In addition to dependency, overdoses can also occur. Overdoses bring on symptoms like hallucinations, depression, delusions, more intestinal problems, constipation, dry mouth, aggression and tremors are also common as well as listlessness.

Side Effects

Withdrawal from Kratom is basically identical to that of heroin. Chills, goose bumps, muscle aches and body pain all over are just some of the wonderful attributes of going through Kratom detox. Individuals are arriving in emergency rooms with these symptoms and mystifying doctors until they come clean about Kratom use. However, many doctors have not heard of this substance which makes it even more dangerous.

Status

Between 2010 and 2011 nine deaths were associated with the use of Kratom, although it was undetermined whether Kratom was the main culprit for the deaths or one of the added substances in the mixture. Currently Kratom is a controlled substance in Sweden, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Denmark, and Poland.

Diamonds are a best friend for man’s best friend

An ideal gift for the wealthy dog lovers (credit: Clearviews… | Dreamstime.com)

If diamonds are a great way to say, “I love you” to that special someone, then why can’t it be so for man’s best friend?

A new collection of high-end jewelry is now available for those lovable furry canines. La Collection de Bijoux offers dog collars encrusted with precious jewelry, including diamonds and sapphires, ranging from 0,000 to .2 million, according to the Daily Mail.

I Love Dogs Diamonds, the company which specializes in custom-made jewelry for dogs, has taken the human-canine relationship to a whole new level. So whoever has an extra .2 million lying around and wants to pamper their favorite pet, they could get the Amour Amour dog collar, the most expensive collar in the world. The 52-carat piece is one of a kind, and it will certainly get the neighbors’ attention.

Most of the collars features pieces that are encrusted with hundreds of diamonds hanging from leather collars. If the Amour Amour is too pricey for your bank account, you only need to plunk down 0,000 for the Amour De La Mer, a collar with 600 hand-set diamonds and an 8.5-carat sapphire that one would normally find on an expensive engagement ring.

For the wealthy dog lovers, these gift ideas will surely get their furry little friends’ tails wagging.
